Hello Dearests,

My birthday is coming up and I’d love to have your assistance celebrating. While I’d be be so thrilled to hang in-person with y’all, things are what they are this year...the good news is that this quarantine situation provides an excuse to hang with folks who I usually wouldn’t get to see on my birthday due to distance! Also it’s chill for local friends to not have to battle transit, traffic, or parking. Who would I invite if distance were no obstacle? You, the answer is you. ❤️Will you hang out with me online for part of a Saturday?

I’ve planned a list of activities for July 11th that will act as a sort of online open house. Feel free to attend the stuff you’re interested in/available for and come and go as you like. You’re welcome to invite others and include your household/family/whoever. Most (or all?) of the day is kid friendly.

If you do plan on attending one or more of the activities below, please RSVP here so I know to expect you, can send you links and info, mail supplies if applicable, etc.

Here’s the high-level summary. Please see details below.
and Please RSVP if you plan on attending for any of the activities…

July 11th 2020

Here’s my phone number if you don’t already have it and anything comes up! 651-497-5899

Part 1: Mochi making class

Time: 2-3:30 pm PST/4-5:30 PM CST/5-6:30 PM EST
[Zoom link for class]

What is it?

This instructor will teach us online in a private class how to make a few kinds of mochi :) We’ll be making Hawaiian butter mochi, ice cream mochi, and mochi filled with chocolate/strawberries/bean paste/peanut butter/sunflower butter.

What to do if you want to participate:

  1. Make sure you RSVP here so I know you’re coming and we can work out making sure you have what you need and the link for the class.
Note: no limit to the number of people attending, so feel free to attend even if you RSVP last-minute. You’ll just need to find all the supplies!

  2. You’ll need to gather a few things on your own, mostly just the perishable stuff. Here’s a list:

    • If you RSVP’d early and I managed to send you supplies ahead of time, your box/bag should contain these things (otherwise you’ll need to gather these)

      • 2 boxes of Mochiko rice flour (probably the hardest to find, but most higher-end groceries and Asian markets will have it)

      • 3 cups of sugar

      • at least 1 cup of cornstarch

      • 1/2 tsp salt

      • 2 tsp baking powder

    • 1/2 cup of butter or vegan spread

    • 4 cups of milk (or milk alternative)

    • 4 eggs (if you’re vegan or don’t do eggs, please check that on the RSVP form linked above and I’ll send you egg substitute powder too; I have a lot of it on hand already)

    • Fresh strawberries

    • Nutella, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter

    • Ice cream (or vegan substitute)

    • Totally optional: red bean paste (you can get online or at an Asian market)

  3. As far as equipment all you need is:

    • A stove or microwave

    • A cutting board and knife

    • A big microwavable glass or ceramic bowl (or a big pot for the stove if you don’t have a microwave)

Cost:

~$10-30 or less depending on what you have on hand and what you have to buy.

Part 2: Online Tarot Class

Time: 4-5:30 PST/6-7:30 CST/7-8:30 EST
[Zoom link for class]

What is this?

This instructor will teach us a private class online on interpreting tarot (basically this class, but just for us). It doesn’t matter if you believe in tarot readings or not. Yes yes, I know, the Barnum Effect…but hey, tarot is pretty fun, I do think it’s a useful framework for reflecting (and god knows how ample our time for reflecting is right now) on how we perceive our current circumstances/possibilities/fears…and also…the cards! Such a variety of artwork and expression, card stocks, the packaging, the ceremony, the ritual…I mean, it’s hard not to crush on it even just a little bit. If you have a deck already, grab it; if you don’t have one, then I think you’ll have fun shopping for one. Then join me for this online.

What to do if you want to participate:

  1. Please RSVP here so that I know you’re coming and can send you the Zoom link ahead of time.

  2. (not absolutely required) Find your deck if you have one already, or go shopping if you don’t! I found a variety of designs I thought were pretty cool that are pictured and linked below, but feel free to google on your own. There are a number of vintage and indie-made decks on Etsy and eBay too. This is the one I snagged with amazing illustrations by Pedro’s friend Sophy Hollington.

Cost:

~$12-50+ for a tarot card deck
…or $0. This is pretty low key, so a deck isn’t really that required. I think you can also use some free online tarot web sites tbh if you don’t want to invest in a deck…but that will be less fun ;)

Here are some decks I found, for inspiration…

Part 3: Dinner hour

Time: 5:30-6:30 PST/ 7:30-8:30 CST/8:30-9:30 EST
[Zoom link]

What is it?

Let’s eat and drink together before the drag show! Make or order in something special, BYOB, and let’s hang. I’ll provide a soundtrack, y’all can sing me happy birthday or whatever, we can play a game if we feel like it (or not), and we can catch up a bit. I miss you!

What to do if you want to participate:

Make sure you RSVP so I can send you a Zoom link. Other than that, just show up online.

Cost:

Free (except food, but you have to eat anyway)

Part 4: The Stud Drag Show hosted on Twitch.tv

Time:6:30 pm - 8:30 pm PST/8:30 - 10:30 pm CST/9:30-11:30 EST
[Zoom link] [Show link on Twitch.tv]

What is it?

These online shows have been so incredible, with performers from all over the country bringing some amazing artful and entertaining things to this new dimension we find ourselves living and connecting in. It’s maybe the part I’m most looking forward to (besides seeing you). I posted links to a couple of clips below that I grabbed from my favorite songs in the last show I saw to give you an idea of what they’re like…

I’ll open up a separate Zoom link for us to hang and chat in while we watch the show. You can watch the show in a different browser window on Twitch.tv on the same computer.

What to do if you want to participate:

  1. Please RSVP so I can send you a Zoom link and the info on watching the show.

  2. You’ll need to set up a Twitch account to watch the show. Don’t worry, it’s free and pretty painless.

Cost:

  • $10 cover (paid on the honor system to DragAlive through Venmo or Cashapp, or you can pay me via other means and I can pay via one of those apps for you)

  • Tips for the performers (also Venmo/Cashapp)
